Talking Shop

Today I had lunch with one of the kids from the DFR shop who spends 90% of his awake time building things, designing things, and eating, sleeping and breathing "shop" and the other 20% tossin' back a brewski. My dear gentleman friend (we'll call him "Andrew" for short) was also present. He works on the formula-hybrid model. Tree-hugger.... I am aware that those percentages overlap; that is not a mistake, but I digress...
It was refreshing. I used to be the same way, but in the offroad sense, rather than the racing sense. Most kids at this school, including the engineers, have no idea about cars - much less any idea about cars that have been....altered, or why someone would even bother to do such a thing. I think this is what I want to do with my last year here. I can't imagine I'll learn so much more in a year that I'll suddenly decide I want to keep digging, academically. I love the shop language - heck, it might even be a lifestyle. It might be nice to spend that time doing something I know I'll be comfortable in. I have a lot to bring to the table already. I don't know if I quite miss the taste of gear oil, but hopefully that was a one-time thing.

This picture is much cooler when you notice the difference in height between the wheel wells and the tires on each side. My Jeep has since grown very much, it is just a babe, here

What I aspire to do...

Maybe I'll start an entirely new branch of SAE at the Engineering School (Society of Automotive Engineers...not the fraternity, all you greek nerds...) devoted to offroad competition. Because didn't you hear?? The world isn't flat.

Today I learned that the "no one but family allowed in the ambulance" rule is a terrible one. What if you get hurt while babysitting? Leave the kids alone? Leave the kids with strangers?

I hope you didn't learn that the "family only in the ambulance" rule sucks through experience. That sounds like it would be somewhat stressful.

So I re-read this in light of our phone conversation earlier... I love you. You are hilarious.
