Wow

Puppies are exhausting.

My legs hurt from walking her so much. And stooping down to pull everything she tries to eat out of her mouth, including poop. And that's in addition to the 2+ miles I walk to and from the bus station every day to get to work and back, twice (to walk her on my lunch break).

And I'm tired from waking up in the middle of the night every night to let her out to pee.

And my god...the cute is just wholly overwhelming.

So, yeah. That's why I haven't been posting. Also Paulie is home, so I'm sorry world, you can wait.

Happy Birthday To Me (yesterday)

My booty thus far includes: a vegetable & cheese party, working late on a friday, getting my purchasing offer on a house rejected, a cookbook for diabetics, and a 2 hour shopping spree at EMS for Paul's upcoming 2-month cross country road trip to study rocks. And a dinner and a nice sweater from the "in-laws". That was very nice, though - 3 whole courses!

UPDATE: The night after my birthday, I got an awesome bout of food poisoning.

Dartmouth Summer v 5.0

For all my Dartophile readers: It is Paulie's Sophomore Summer! And I have finally made time in my busy schedule to come spend a weekend with him and *shudders* sleep in a frat house. It also happens to be Parent's Weekend, so I've met a few "fellow adults" and when they realize I'm just visiting, they ask if I go to another school, and I tell them "No, I graduated from here two years ago" and then because they noticed I'm with Paul, they assume I must be his older sister. Well, on the upside at least this means we keep our PDA to a healthy minimum. There've been BBQs galore and the weather has been gorgeous and I know exactly what I want on the menu from any shop we walk past, and basically, Its good to be home.

I posted a picture of myself making the exact same face and the exact same caption about a year ago... I still love cookies, but I eat more of the sugar-free/Splenda variety now. P.S. Go Sox.

Valentine's Day Dinner

Somebody had big Valentine's Day plans in New York City this weekend, but then he realized that my weekend rehearsal schedule meant we had to be in Boston on Valentine's Day. Obviously this is devastating because of Boston's inferior palate. So I thought perhaps I'd make a delicious meal for my darling gentleman, since he is the one usually cooking for me. And it was also my fault that his plans were ruined.

Around 7 pm on Saturday, after french toast breakfast in Connecticut, driving back to Boston, rehearsal, playing video games, touring MIT, renting movies, and generally goofing off, I decided I should probably start cooking. I was all set to go (with maybe a call or two to Mom for tips) and started collecting my ingredients. Much to my disappointment, I pulled out the ground beef I'd been saving to notice it was startlingly...brown. Even all the juice was brown (and this was one of those fancy vacuum-sealed packages. The sell-by-date was Feb 10th. Nix Meatloaf. Because I can think of nothing less romantic than spending Valentine's Day latenight on the toilet.

So, instead, this was dinner
World's Lamest Girlfriend award goes to...ME!

At least I sort of made up for it today by 1) having the day off and 2) unexpectedly walking right by a restaurant called Finale that I'd read about a few days earlier while looking for a place to eat lunch. It is mostly a bakery and dessert shop, but the sandwiches were delicious, even if we did wait 20 minutes for sandwiches that took 40 seconds to eat. I liken them to roller coasters, which I also love. The fruit & cream tart made me happy. That is all I can say. It was a happy tart. The creme brulee and chocolate decadence cake were also good.

[Edit] I forgot to mention that B and Paulie collaborated on dinner Sunday night to make the most delicious white bolognese with pasta and tomato/mozzarella/fresh basil appetizers I could ever imagine. They are awesome. And I napped the entire time they were cooking.

Happy Birthday to This Guy!

No, I Don't Have Better Things To Do

I just don't feel like posting every day anymore. I sleep probably 60% of most days, and follow my boy around being a doting girlfriend 20% of the time, and the other 20% I split between eating, applying for more jobs, showering, my photo projects, and catching up on 30Rock, Prison Break, and The Office. Note that I am still not working out.

The one fun story I have for you today is that on Saturday, my mom called and woke me up at noon to tell me that she wanted to come up to Boston for dinner and to see my apartment. I was in Hanover. In 3 hours, I loaded the car, took some pictures at Shop Day (DFR), and convinced Paul to come down, too, and skip out on his frat basement for the night. Farmer John has wanted to try out the Hilltop Steakhouse and Butchershop since his Thanksgiving trip to Texas last year where it was recommended to him and his love for red meat. We made it happen, and they brought the kids, too.

It was awesome. I had a filet because I can't eat more than 8 oz. of anything except chocolate at a time and I don't eat red meat very often anymore. We also demolished two onion blossoms and a bunch of IBC Root Beer. The highlights were the placemats - exceptionally thorough cartoons of how and where to slice your cow, and driving the 30 minutes from my apartment with two of us stuffed in the back of the minivan on the floor with sleeping bags because my mother had removed some of the seats.

Then the kids spent the night, and I let them (and Paul) stay up until 2 am playing World of Warcraft because I'm a terrible babysitter. We woke up around 10, which is exactly when we needed to leave to meet my mother halfway - in Worcester - to drop off the kids before taking my College Student back to school to study for his exam (today). I am embarrassed to admit that I actually said the words "If we don't leave NOW, you won't get Starbucks!!". We didn't leave then but they still got their Starbucks (see today's Daily Photo), and because I am my mother's daughter, she was even later than we were.

Addendum to 'Keeper' Post

Not everything he does is amazing and intelligent. I caught a picture of him in the process of doing something very stupid (remember, wheels roll) and then a picture of him laying on the ground in pain after having done something very stupid. He fell onto the back of the car and landed on the rear shock absorber in a place that a rear shock absorber has no business being.

But, he's still very sweet. My Daily Photo today is one of the new fish and tank that he bought for his roommate and best friend after the very large goldfish he was given to care for as a punishment by their stupid, stupid fraternity was brutally murdered by a fellow pledge of theirs.

My Keeper

This boyfriend I have, he's very cute. And exceptionally lucky is the fact that we are both very close with our own families, and also quite fond of each other's families.

Some time recently, he accompanied me to a Family Dinner at aunt&uncle's house (I have been to a lot of those lately, being unemployed and all...) and after dinner, he offered to help clean up. A dinner for 10 people tends to have a lot of mess in the making and dishes dirtied. My uncle, though, is a dish devour-er, and didn't really need the help. So, to not disappoint my eager young friend, he gave him a piece of clean tupperware to put out of his way in the tupperware cabinet.

When he opened the cabinet door, a few pieces of plastic or lids fell out onto the floor, so my uncle had the brilliant idea to tell my darling boy to busy himself by organizing it.

My aunt, whose kitchen it really is, was enjoying her after-dinner conversation and not paying much attention to this cleaning up. When she mopped and disinfected the following morning and I went downstairs for breakfast, she had noticed the clean tupperware cabinet and exclaimed to me "Did you see the tupperware cabinet?? He's a keeper!!" And my aunt? She is a tough lady from whom to gain approval.

He's also got those gorgeous hazel eyes...

The College On The Hill

I'm making this post more for the sake of accomplishing something today, rather than share anything with you, as I have very little to share these days except for my head cold and I promise you don't want that.

The past few weeks I spent, rabbit in tow, in Hanover for Thayer School's career fair, at my aunt & uncle's house for some impromptu family time, and back in Hanover for Homecoming and simply because yelling at my boyfriend's roommate to pick his dirty boxers up off the floor feels better than sitting around contemplating the major life decisions I can't even make, yet. I also managed to invest in a "grown-up" wardrobe not unlike how the RNC invested in one for Sarah Palin.

I planted 3 major job seeds at the career fair - ones that sprouted into interviews - and one on my own. Two of them, if successful, would start immediately. Immediately being whenever they feel like calling me, giving me a number, me desperately accepting, and them asking me to come in the next day. That was supposed to be last Monday. One of them did call, and ask if I was interested in a different job in their office, but the other is on an extended trip to Japan. Maybe I'll hear from them tomorrow? Then again, I've been thinking that every day for two weeks....

On a completely different note, my handsome, 19-year-old boyfriend is now pledging a fraternity, and that demands his every waking moment for very important things like watching all five Saw movies or manning a grill for 48 consecutive hours or playing in a frisbee tournament. It also influences many aspects of his life like wardrobe (he no longer wears his shirts right side out) or his hygiene (he is growing a neck beard). And that's all I have to say about that.

And despite the above, I managed to put on a smile, a warm jacket, the most mung-repellent shoes I could find, and have a Happy Homecoming. The highlight was probably Friday afternoon when, out of nowhere, bff Erin in her cute little white Honda pulled around the corner of the boy's fraternity's front yard and I dropped whatever I was holding and sprinted after her car. Second after that was lunch with the boy's parents, who came to visit unaware how busy their son would be with such important things, during which he had to temporarily leave for some unknown fratboy assclownery. And third was the news article about the kid who jumped into the bonfire's leftover embers in the wee hours and had to be airlifted to Boston. Watching the boy serve drinks to idiot frat girls from inside a 2-foot-tall closet in a staircase was pretty funny, too.

Dartmouth will always hold that special place in my heart. Y'know, the one that makes me fake intoxication so that no one will expect me to drink more... That fire extinguisher in the background was entirely filled with almost straight vodka. And it was colored red.

Therapy

Well, I'm still unemployed, which is not surprising considering I haven't applied to a single job, yet. I did update my resume, at the very least. It looks more like an entry to a contest to see who can fit the most words on a single page than a list of my employment qualifications. In theory that's a good thing, and should go well if I actually start applying. I've poked around a little and I can't find another job description that looks like it was written for me. Its disheartening. So I went on vacation. REAL Vacation.

Ok, so when Belinda Carlisle sings about Heaven being A Place On Earth, she's actually talking about my dad's cabin on Manitoulin Island in Ontario. I know what you're thinking - "Seriously? Canada? Canadian Islands? I hope you were smoking a lot of something good..." but I wasn't smoking anything at all, not even the fish we would have caught had we gotten the fishing boat out of storage. I just love this place.

My Grandfather got in on this property back in the 50s sometime, and the group of owners built a little cabin. That cabin is now the real cabin's "yacht club." We call it the Lasata Lodge, built in 1964. Its a charming little, exceptionally rustic, cozy, unheated wooden house on a crystal blue freshwater bay. It hasn't been updated much except for furnishings and kitchenwares since then. There is no internet, one phone with a 3 foot cord, and no TV.
I haven't been since before high school. Not even the year that my Grandfather died and my dad took his ashes up to their final resting place. Some of that is for good reason, but some is just me being terribly lame and not wanting to leave civilization or wanting to make the 18 hour drive (from anywhere). My sister was up earlier in the summer (when it was still warm enough to swim) waiting on my Grandmother, who hadn't been in even longer, hand and foot, so she could enjoy her late husband's home away from home before she gets too old to make the trip. For this reason, she will probably inherit everything, and I will be left a hate letter because I was still working then, and couldn't take that much consecutive time off.

I took my dear boy with me, convinced my father to take a few days off work (since he's so far out in the middle of nowhere that its only an 8 hour drive for him) and had myself a good, happy Re-Lax. The best part? Max was there!! And he is still the cutest, most wonderfully fuzzy dog in the world. He gives hugs. And my dad cooked delicious, entirely homemade meals every day. This might have been my favorite vacation, ever.

There are two things you should note: I brought Oliver. Not because he needed to be there, but because B (my roommate) does not like furry rodent-like creatures and I was afraid he might feel dejected if he was home alone for a week and she might even forget to feed him. He pretty much stayed in his cage the whole time, taunting the poor dog behind his plastic armor. But at least he didn't get depressed. He hated the car ride, though. If he could hold a sledgehammer, he would have hit me with one. While I was driving. Don't ask me where he might get a sledgehammer.
Secondly, we cheated. Paul and I both brought our computers, stocked with video games and sitcom episodes. Kind of contrary to the point of the cabin, but it is 2008, after all. And it was the perfect opportunity to get my dad as addicted to 30Rock as I am. It was too cold to swim, and the weather was miserable for the first two days, but we did break the canoe out one day and fight the wind for 2 hours on the bay. Dad also managed to teach Paul a few new card games. And they dug out the septic tank for repair next spring. Then we finished winterizing, and headed home.
Now, I am sleeping a lot and making sure I like my life plan. I baked a pan of cookies for B last night, but they sucked. The were like little bricks with soft delicious centers. I will probably be moseying across the Charles here shortly and looking for a lab job at MIT and hopefully enrolling part time in the spring.

Old And Unemployed

Well, my job didn't pan out. We've been talking to different established companies that we could partner with for bits and pieces of the technology we need, and one very recently came through, rendering my internal engineering job useless. Its a bummer, but that was the risk I took in a start-up. On the upside, I FINALLY get to take a vacation. I'm going to go see Max. And maybe I'll go use the elliptical at my gym a few times instead of paying $72 a month just for emailed tips on how to live a better life by going to mock boot camp.

In other news, I had a birthday. I spent a few days in the Hamptons before going back to work on my actual birthday to be covered in rotten vegetables and poo-smell again at the job I would soon lose. I stayed with some friends of the boy's family (and the family) and hid indoors in their gorgeous glass house the whole time. I don't do well in the sun. The jetskiing was my favorite part. That, and the breakfast sandwiches. And the one day that my breakfast sandwich accidently got taken in the beach-bound car at 8 am, so the boy magically pulled together a giant plate of french toast out of leftover baguette.

And these? These are the sweetest shoes I've ever owned; a gift from the sweetest 19 year old I know. You know you're totally jealous.

Can't Help Myself

I've had these two pictures on my desktop since I took them, and I just have to share them. This badass mofo? That's my boyfriend. All mine. But you can enjoy the pictures.

Life is Hard

I've been terrible about posting, I know, I apologize. But you would be slacking on the internet, too, if you had an apartment to paint, clean, unpack, furnish, and organize AND a full-time job with a 30 minute commute when there is ZERO traffic. There is ALWAYS traffic on my way home; I've taken to Harry Potter books on tape. NPR is next. I'm sure you understand.

What have I been up to? Pretty much trying to put my apartment (and life) together here in Boston and get settled in my job. I had my review (The company tells me whether or not they want to hire me full time or just keep me for the summer) yesterday, so I've been pretty nervous about that. I also am still on the most-unhealthy college student sleeping schedule, since I never had a transition period. THIS is my transition period.

I am out of my apartment from 8 am until about 7 pm almost every day, then I try to relax for a little while before going on an unpacking or online-shopping frenzy. I don't clean very often. This is a point of frustration for my beloved roommate, B, but she isn't in much of a position to do anything about it as she not only works full time as well, but she is taking pre-med classes. And I've been traveling almost every weekend, or had more visitors than my tiny apartment can handle. At least I've been doing laundry. However, B is doing all the cooking, because I have somehow lost that ability. I finally made her a dinner last week; boxed mac & cheese and sliced hot dogs. I am a pro-chef.

This weekend past, however, I had one of the most relaxing weekends of my entire life. Which was good, considering my upcoming review. I drove out to NY state to hang by the pool (see pool, by lake, below) with my freshman and eat the food his wonderful parents cooked for us. Homemade breakfast sandwiches. Oh! And they have a giant treehouse, with a big rope swing. As for the job review - they decided that they don't want to decide, yet. I am extremely happy with this, because I have another month to prove that I CAN bring my A-game. Bring it on. I'm just sayin'.

Saturday At The Fort

Putting the new camera-toy to good use during bloom season has gone swimmingly, but not nearly as well as snapping about 600 shots of this adorable little princess.

We walked to Fort Shantok (on the reservation) Saturday while killing time waiting for The Boy's bus to leave for NYC. (There was a party Friday night at the Hotel for a friend's birthday, so he came up to visit after the rest of us ran up a $433 tab at my favorite Mexican restaurant. Fresh raspberry muddled mojitos!!) I would have joined her, but I was wearing a dress and I don't think that is socially acceptable at age 22.

Afterwards, I stuck around for Farmer John's Birthday Dinner. I might be the worst step-daughter in the world, since I wasn't aware of any birthdays at all until I arrived at my mom's house mid-afternoon. Sorry, John! Happy Birthday!!

Best Meal Of My Life

This was the sign over the door of a charming little eatery at which I had lunch with a very handsome gentleman a few weeks ago. (there! I said it! I mentioned him!)

You know I love my hot dogs, but these were no ordinary hot dogs. These hot dogs? These hot dogs were WRAPPED IN BACON!!

The State of Allie

1. I am a runner again! I just had a good run that was over 5 miles and I feel...like I should have gone longer, which is how I like to feel when I run. Also, there is a blister on my left clavicle where my SHIRT chafed me.

2. If you remember the kid that went to Africa and wonder why I haven't mentioned him lately, its because it didn't work out. I'm only sad that I never got to punch him in the face. He took my freaking M&M's when he left!!! Who takes the chocolate!?!?

3. I am finally getting into the meat of my throttle control project now that proposals are over and it is REALLY intimidating. The fine print reads "This group will also be responsible for any other unforeseen issues that arise" or something like that, so we're finding a lot of other stuff that we didn't think would be an issue before. What it comes down to is that we can't assume that anything on the car will work like we expect it to, we need to make it work how we want it to.

I feel alive.

Oh, and 4. I got another new fish, but he's camera shy so I haven't even given him a name, yet. He's a bi-color angel fish.

Pop Quiz

If your sweet, handsome young boyfriend is leaving in 2 hours for the airport to go to Africa for 2 1/2 months, how should you spend those last precious moments together? Should you:

a) Curl up on the couch to cuddle/relax and watch a movie.

b) 2 1/2 months!? Go out for drinks and find a new boyfriend!

c) Give him a haircut and demolish his sideburns.

This is a pretty subjective quiz, since everyone prefers a unique relationship dynamic, but I can tell you from experience that if you pick option C, you FAIL.
